Rythms of Nature
Waterbased Media on Canvas

While living in the Midwest, the artist lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where she found the richness of the landscape so overwhelming, that photography was out of the question. It was all too rich; too much.

After three years, she began to experience the complexities of the landscape in a new way: simplifying its rich tapestries and identifying the subtle colors and rhythmic nuances of the mountains, forests and plains. Cloud formations seemed to mirror each geographical formation on any given day.

The watercolor and acrylic technique in these paintings evolved during this time, while she explored the rich undulating energies of land and sky, and palettes that shifted hourly and transformed as the sun traveled across the sky.

From the dusk and mist over the mountains emerged forms and shapes that resonated with undulating energies: the same breathtaking beauty that would not be captured by a camera lens, led Alicia to capture that beauty in her heart and in a blending of liquid watercolors with acrylic, often using dry brush technique.

Her unique vision of nature, animals, and landscapes appeared her earliest works. Pictured here, at the age of 19, is the artist at an exhibition of early works:  in an acrylic seascape in which we see the foreshadowing of the stylized landscapes, and her first and only oil on canvas, "Messengers of the New Dawn," which appears on the EQUINEARTS Galleries home page.
